What is the alternative to an enterprise portal strategy in the Java space?

How could Java enterprise code move from Java enterprise servers to containers and virtualized infrastructure?

  • Orthodox Java apps at present means deploying a package to a big app server. However, new Java/JVM language deployments are moving towards stand-alone apps with embedded web servers. Could these move to an OS-layer infrastructure such as and locally-hosted virtualized infrastructure?

  • Answer:

You can always deploy your app server in a Docker container. these are on a different level. A newer approach is the use of microservice: self contained small apps that communicates together. You can for example have a stack made of: OpsCode Chef recipes building your docker containers embedding spring boot plain old jars starting their own tomcat server. You can then have an Enterprise Service Bus making all these container-embedded-apps communicating together..
