Notetaking: How do you take notes while in a computer science class?
-
I am a senior student who will continue my master study in US in the 2014fall. And now i am confusing how you guys take notes in class. when i am in class, i always print all the slide and take notes in the blank areas, but in some cases, there are little areas for me to take notes and using a specific notebook to take notes will lead to the result that the notes is separated with the slide and lecture. and it will be inconvenient to review it. and in US, print all the lecture and slide is a little expensive what's more, i always use Office Onenote to take notes when i taking the Coursera courses. i will screenshot the slide of the video and paste it in the onenote, after that, i will take notes above and below the slide. in this ways, i feel more trouble, because typing is always slower and inconvenient than writing in the paper. especially when i should write some code (ex: algorithm methods). in that way, perhaps i will concentrate more on taking notes rather than listen to teacher. PS: Is it permit to take a computer while listening in class? i am confusing how you take notes when you're in a computer science class. can anyone shares about it~

Answer:
Ryan makes good points -most of your learning computer science classes will come from reading textbooks and practical exercises. The lectures give an overview of the concept and a chance to ask questions whilst you are absorbing; which can be followed up in more detail during your tutorials. I do think this it's helpful to get a print out of the lecture slides and use a highlighter pen and some reminders if something doesn't make sense in order to do the follow up.

I have taken notes in maybe 2 classes throughout my whole degree. Read the textbook and course notes before going to class. Then give your undivided attention to the lecture. This way you are actually thinking about the class rather than scrambling to copy notes. Moreover, your notes are going to be riddled with errors anyway. In my opinion, taking notes is completely stupid, no idea why anyone does it. It's fine to jot down a couple key things the prof said, or to write down meta information (administrative stuff about the class), but your main reference should definitely not be the notes you took in class.
