What are the reasons that government and education are not clearly declaring the history happened between Thomas Edison and Nikola Tesla?
-
I didn't attend elementary or middle school, but from what I have know so far, most people believe that Thomas Edison was one of the greatest inventor. I just wonder why the government, or education, or media are not illustrating the history between them to the most part of people?

Answer:
Edison is much easier to understand and explain, and hence more suitable as the American technological hero. (He did steal an invention from Tesla by not paying for development work, but this is not so important when their total contributions are compared.) Tesla was a far greater genius, and more difficult to understand. His discoveries from 1889 and later - luminous energy etc. - are not properly understood by modern scientists. But they like to think they have passed that stage, and don't want to study and repeat so old experiments.

The short answer is that historians and scientists don't like to mix. Another issue is that the Internet likes to jump to conclusions about things when: A. Historians take much longer to come to conclusions. and B. Scientists are not particularly interested in how we got where we are; they're more focused on doing the actual work (and their funding). So Internet evangelists for Tesla are kind of caught in a Catch-22: the scientists aren't very interested in the matter, and the historians are going to take their time in changing the narrative, if they see fit. Usually, historians don't like to make huge swings in the historical record: it makes them look bad, and they've been studying something entirely different their entire professional lives. So, although Matthew Inman (from The Oatmeal) makes pretty charts and witty stories about how Tesla is the real hero behind electricity, that's not going to convince Ph. D. types. They will have to kibbutz with each other for a few years, write some books, and then those books will have to reference other authors to write textbooks which change the record. And even then, it won't tell the new story in the same way, because revising history is a serious recipe for controversy. Back in the '60s, a bunch of lefty historians decided they were going to rewrite history entirely, changing from the traditional views of history to a major shift towards radicalism, favoring communist revolutionaries, vilifying major industrialists of the 19th and 20th centuries, and generally oversimplifying the record to make capitalism look evil and communist look like idealist lambs. I'm not saying the record needed to be straightened out, but the Howard Zinns of the world took the revisionism so far in the other direction that blowback was inevitable. It's shocking that that blowback took a solid generation, but it did, and the revisionists have been challenged, their over-reaction has been noted, and major revisionism has been pooh-poohed for the time being. So, to sum up, scientists are not going to pay much attention to this because they are scientists, not historians. Historians are going to take their sweet time make changes because they don't like to make big changes too quickly. Schools have to wait for scientists to change their minds, and then textbook writers to write new textbooks. You've got a bit of a wait ahead of you.

The modern mythology of the internet has made Tesla the God, and Edison the Devil. Tesla was far from a God, and Edison was not the Devil. Both men were probably geniuses, both were a bit crazy. Edison secretly supported a scientist who used dogs and other animal for experiments showing the dangers of alternating current. Tesla was a proponent of a selective breeding and eugenics, he wanted to eliminate "undesirables" by sterilizing criminals and the mentally ill. Tesla never married, his fondest love was a pigeon. How would you suggest the government clear up internet myths and legends? In the case of Tesla, if the government made any statements there would be many people who would immediately dismiss it because of the many conspiracy theories regarding many of Tesla's inventions. Then there is the much bigger issue of the government trying to manage information on the internet. You really want the government trying to clear up internet myths and legends? Most people would be happier if the government spent less time on the internet, not more. What role does education have in clearing up internet myths and legends? If you are worried about Thomas Edison getting too much credit, that I can agree with. But as far as setting the record straight regarding Tesla, he equally gets too much credit. Tesla's greatest successes happened when he partnered with George Westinghouse in the War of Currents. I don't remember learning anything at all about George Westinghouse when I was in school. I remember the Westinghouse brand name on many appliances over the years, but I did not know who was the man behind the brand when I was growing up. As an adult as I have studied technology, I have come to admire and respect George Westinghouse as one of the many forgotten geeks who have contributed to our world. There is a famous quote attributed to Mark Twain, "I have never let my schooling interfere with my education." The faults in the educational system are numerous, and way beyond the scope of a question on the myths and legends of Edison and Tesla. But getting back to what Mark Twain said, learning is a life long adventure. I am constantly learning. I am continuously doing what I can to help clear up the myths and legends regarding famous geeks, that's why I am here now, trying to understand your question.I have seen different variations of the Edison versus Tesla debate asked numerous times on Quora, as in the two you have referenced in the question itself. In the battle of the two crazy mad scientists, the story is often told where Tesla is the victor in the battle of good versus evil, defeating his rival, the evil Edison. Much of what is said is exaggerated for the sake of a good story. The myths and legends grow stronger every day on the internet. Everyone needs to do their part in setting the record straight.
