In the first generation mobile phones it was not possible to change the simcard without removing the battery.Why has the trend changed now and the nowadays smartphones have a sim slot just like a memory card slot?

Answer:
A lot of other things changed along with this small change in cell phones! Most importantly, they got slimmer, more slots got added for SD card etc. SIM slot is now hot swap enabled in many phones. For major reason it was a cosmetic change I would guess. And also has good amount of impact on the circuit board real estate.
