What are some topics I should consider for economics research projects? I would prefer if the topics also touched technology in some sense.
-
I am looking for possible topics that include both economics and technology. The period of the project is 4 months. My major is in technology but since I am interested in economics, I would love to amalgamate both in my project. I have taken introductory courses in Economics, Business and Finance and Business management. And I am ready to work a lot more as long as the topic interests me. Also, I am from India. So if it is about studying a region, it is preferable it is in western India. Else, core economics topic will also be great..

Answer:
You could do a project on engineering and replacing labour: this is particularly applicable to India, which doesn't lack manpower. Is replacing work by hand ( in rural locations) with machines the best idea? What would be the social impact. Anything to do with ways to improve technological development is topical, and more importantly has a greater chance to get funding. Ways of networking Universities, Businesses and getting infrastructure in place to create an Indian Sillicon Valley. Would this be possible or even desirable in India? Any project costed that could demonstrate financial benefit would be of use to someone, you could possibly contact a charity, NGO or even a government department. Which Engineering project would create the best cost / benefit? This is the sort of information that people really want to know.

Talk about phones in Africa. They have made HUGE strides and changed the entire economy and really improved the lives of the people there (microlending, payments, etc etc.), there billions in aid funding did nothing.

You could try finding the GINI values for the different Chinese provinces and Indian states. A nice comparison, showing if possible how this changed over time. I've a notion that in China, there is a vast advantage in being on the coast, whereas India is much more even. But that is just a notion.
