What embassies have an educational branch within it?

Will a new branch of the military ever be formed for the domain of cyberspace?

  • The military has said that cyberspace is now it's "fifth domain" of warfare, along with land, sea, air and space. The other domains clearly coincide with a branch of the military: land- army, sea- navy, air/space- air force (both of these domains are closely related). The marines fit somewhere in between land/sea and are really (correct me if I'm wrong) a specialized sea-based land-fighting force. Cyber doesn't seem fit with the other branches. Is it's current state similar to the early days of military aviation? There seem to be large parallels- they are (were) both technologies that are (were) new and don't (didn't) seem specific to just one military branch. Is the current state of aviation similar to what cyberwarfare will be like in the future? Aviation has it's own dedicated branch, but other branches also have their own specialized aviation technology. This would seem like a logical future for cyber- each branch could maintain defensive functions, while one branch could focus on huge offensive capabilities. Would creating a new branch make sense? That is, in a hypothetical future where cyberspace becomes extremely crucial (maybe we're already at that point), would putting the best of the best cyber experts in one military branch be a sensible idea?

  • Answer:

Mr. Smith's previous answer is mostly correct, however the NSA is only in charge of US cyber warfare resources. The actual body is U.S. Cyber Command (USCYBERCOM), which itself is comprised of Joint service components from the Air Force, Navy, Army, and Marines. Is it's current state similar to the early days of military aviation? Somewhat, but advances in cybertech happen at tremendously faster rates than those in aviation. The requirements for access (i.e. being able to log onto a computer and access the internet anywhere vs. testing and building and training to fly an aircraft) are way lower for cyberwarfare. Some parallels do exist, but the differences are probably more significant. Is the current state of aviation similar to what cyberwarfare will be like in the future? This is much harder to get a bead on. The Air Force was originally part of the Army/Navy until 1947 after WWII when air power became a major player in war. If we have (and survive) another major conflict cyberwarfare will play a huge part and may merit having its own department. Would creating a new branch make sense? From an arena-based perspective (land, sea, air, cyberspace), creating a new branch does make a certain amount of sense. If you look at the development of the Air Force as an example, it went through several iterations before becoming its own service, and it seems cyber is following the same path. Will a new branch of the military ever be formed for the domain of cyberspace? Its hard to say, the current setup already draws on all of the services with cyber capabilities and falls under the same roof of USCYBERCOM. I don't know if a true 'Cyber Service' will ever come about, if it did it would mostly be a matter of consolidation/restructuring as the functional elements are already in place. *For more info check out: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Cyber_Command http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyberwarfare#Cyberwarfare_in_the_United_States

We have it, the NSA.  However, an adversary can just unplug, so cyber warfare is over rated as a threat.  Most things - like a wrench, a bike, or a pencil,  are not computer controlled. Many things that are microprocessor controlled are not connected to the Internet.  Anything running a ROM chip is not vulverable to any new threat.  Secret projects are walled off from the outside world with no wires going outside.
