How do I get back into dating?

How do I get back into dating after several years out of it?

  • So, I'm 30.  I was in a relationship for 4 years which ended about a year ago.  After that I basically took a year off from dating and focused on my work.  The last time I dated was prior to that relationship (2007 and before) and it seems like now things are very different from dating as a 25-26-yr old grad student to a 30 yr old working adult (no kids).  I would appreciate any advice.  I have a couple difficulties: 1) The age perspective.  Women my age (30 +/- a few years) seem to be very focused on house/kids/career.  Major difference from before when dating didn't seem so... serious.  I'm actually concerned that how much money I make is a factor, which is disturbing - I'm in education, so I'm stable but am not and will never be rich, or even make 6 figures.  Do women really care that much about that?  Many have kids already.  I'm not against that, but how do I deal with it?  Younger women (21-25) seem lost or confused in their lives, dealing with identity crises.  Something I didn't seem to notice before.  Older (36+) seem uninterested.  2) I made a major cross-country move for a new job.  I have "friends" who are mostly co-workers, but as the current youngest not many opportunities for dating through work or work connections.  The other youngish workers are already married and do couple things, kid things.  How the hell do I meet people?  I always did through work or school before.
