What does a computer engineer do?

What opportunities are available for a computer engineer in Hollywood/Bollywood ? (Not as actor)

  • What opportunities are available for a computer engineer in Hollywood/Bollywood ? (Not as actor, as a computer engineer or something similar). What is right way to approach ? What are some (computer/technology related) companies directly providing solutions/services to Hollywood/Bollywood ?

  • Answer:

I wouldn't call a post production facility, a visual effects company or an animation company a computer/technology related company at all.  Sure they use computer technologies and engineers do work there in various capacities, but the bulk of the work has to do with images, imaging and some data management, not so much with innovation in technology solutions for most part. However, there is a new professional called the DIT - Director of Imaging Technology, that many productions are hiring these days, especially since acquisition has become largely digital instead of on celluloid.  Also, even if shot on celluloid, the film is soon scanned and every process happens in the digital domain, for delivery on various platforms - theatrical, DTH, DVD, VOD etc.  A lot of the DIT's work is in handling the vast amounts of imaging data from production to post, and ensuring the processes are optimal for the output desired. The other areas where computer skills come into great use are in the companies that develop tools for the entertainment industry to use in audio and video production and post production.  But these companies aren't really "Hollywood" or "Bollywood" companies.

Computer Graphics and simplified data management seem are extremely important for Entertainment companies working on special effects. Most of the successful movies - StarTrek series, Terminator series, Avatar, Harry Potter, Jurassic Park, Hulk etc have special effects which was a high contributing factor to its success. And with the advent of 3D movies, it means more data management when the designers are trying out/sharing the prototypes online to bring out next exciting movie/animation for us. Check out this cool video about ILM/Lucas Film's data center that features around a PetaByte (1000 TB) worth of data (750TB online and other cold data), powered by the compute dense(lots of RAM) IBM blade servers and NetApp data storage appliances to manage the huge data. http://allthingsd.com/20110325/lucasfilms-data-center-and-an-encounter-with-the-real-death-star-video/ So, computer graphics, unix administration and data management solutions are what a computer engineer could help the Hollywood industry with and I do confess my views are targeted perhaps specifically towards special effects.
