How do I get rid of the pop up on my browser?

How can I get the virtual keyboard to pop up in the Safari browser on a touch screen PC?

  • n.b. I am NOT talking about iOS. This is slowly driving me insane. I have a web app which is going to be used on a stand at a trade show. We have a large touch screen PC which will have no keyboard attached, but the user needs to enter their name in a text input field. Everything is working really nicely, except... the on screen virtual keyboard does not pop up when you focus on the text input field. In Chrome I found an add on which fixes this perfectly, so it acts like an iPad and brings the keyboard up instantly when you focus on the input field. I can't find anything like that in Safari. The reason I'm using Safari is because the touch screen functionality is massively better in Safari. Chrome barely handles touch screen at all (e.g. you have to tap about five times on a button before it reacts - it's just a mess). Is there any way to get the bloody keyboard working in Safari? Javascript, or browser extension... anything!

Answering this question myself, seeing as it doesn't have a single follower apart from me! I finally settled on a workaround using this jQuery plugin which layers a keyboard onto the screen when you focus on a text input. http://mottie.github.io/Keyboard/basic.html It works very well for this scenario, though I'm still at a complete loss as to why the system virtual keyboard doesn't appear on these screens.
