What are the U.S.E.F. Zones?

Caltrain: If I have a regular round trip monthly pass between zones 3 and 2, can I ride (for some doctor's app't) between zones 3 and 4?

  • I've paid for two zones and it's the same price, but I'm not sure if the Clipper card is really restrictive on zones.

  • Answer:

You would have to buy an extra zone upgrade ticket, which is kind of a pain. On the bright side, you can travel to any zone on the weekend.

No, you cannot ride using your monthly pass. Because you do not tag on before every ride with a monthly pass, the conductor does not know where you boarded and will be forced to assume you have ridden too far on that trip.

On weekdays, the zones are enforced strictly. If you need to go to zone 4, then buy a paper zone upgrade (currently $2 I think) before boarding. If you get checked, show the conductor both your clipper card and the paper upgrade. Buy a new zone upgrade for the trip home because zone upgrades are one-way and indicate the station where you purchased them. As Matt says, on weekends you can travel in all zones.
