How Can I Create an XML to Create a Menu?

Moz: What do you use to create sitemap.xml's & How do you handle them?

  • I have been really wondering if my way of creating sitemap.xml's is optimal. I use this website (http://www.xml-sitemaps.com/) to create minimal sitemaps but I haven't used their payed version. Their payed version actually uses their own server to host the sitemap.xml and then you point Googlebot to that address for scraping. Is this optimal by any means? The reason for this is so they can constantly update the sitemap and upload it on their own server immediately.

    Like another answerer here, AJ, I'm a WordPress guy, and I recommend and use http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/google-sitemap-generator/. If you're building in drupal, there's http://drupal.org/project/xmlsitemap And if you aren't running on a CMS, or even if you are and just want to, there's an online tool to generate a sitemap for you. http://www.xml-sitemaps.com/ Once your domain has a valid sitemap.xml file, be sure to submit it to Google Webmaster Tools and to Bing Tools. (Hey, Bing still matters! :)

Depending on your content management system. I'm a WordPress guy, and I HIGHLY recommend using a plugin that creates the sitemaps for you (something like http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/google-sitemap-generator/ ). Here's the reasoning: What you get from an online sitemap generator: Only crawls links that are visible Outdated the second you create another page. What you get from a dynamic one built into your CMS: Updates your sitemap dynamically every time you create a new page Includes links to pages you may have forgotten to link to If you're running a static site, and don't plan on adding any fresh content, the online ones are great (especially the Pro version if you have lots of pages), but for obvious reasons, I'd recommend against having a stale site.
