What kind of flys to use second week of august on the Leigh river?

What kind of fly pattern would I use to fish for trout on a small river in southern Vermont in March?

  • I've got cabin fever with our latest snow storm, and just noticed that the lower part of the West River is open for catch and release fly-fishing. I was getting all my gear out today, and started thinking I'd get out there, crazy as I might seem to onlookers. But then I wondered what kind of pattern to use. I'd love to hear any advice.

  • Answer:

I'm not familiar with that particular stretch of river, but in March you're likely to see a lot of run off.  I would consider tossing large bright (yellow/green) articulated streamers, or Czech nymphing (also with bigger brighter flies). Czech nymphing will get your flies down to the bottom where the fish are and reduce the drag in the current.
