Is it possible to transfer to architecture major (B.Arch) after sophomore?
-
It's horrible to edit my question with Chinese Internet! I think it is necessary to talk about my situation first. You can know that I am a Chinese student, willing to study in America. I was aiming to enter Top30 school. However, there are something disappointing interrupted me and I have to change my plan. I have great interest in architecture, and I would like to get a B.Arch degree. But what bothers me most is that I donât have basis for architecture, such as sketch skill, and of course I donât have portfolio (Even though I have the experience in photography almost 4 years. I am not sure that if it is qualified enough.) I have to mention that even though I am willing to learn architecture, I have poor knowledge about this field. It just...well...like a dream in my childhood. I even canât remember that how many times I was shocked by the beauty of buildings and works. But I seem to miss the chance and awareness to develop relative skill as a Chinese student, until now. Sorry, I speak too much nonsense. One of the options I can choose is that enter a lower level(not excellent) school to build up the basis and anything that learning architecture needs in freshman and sophomore year (maybe I can have the architecture courses as an external student). Then, I can try to transfer to other university to learn architecture. However, my elder sister ( She is learning in Australia, er.....a little bit lazy. I even think that if she truly know about the system of transfer in US). She told me that it is VERY VERY HARD to transfer to other university. â Are you sure that you have enough time to finish your assignment and get the GPA? Can you prepare for all the standard mark and materials for transfer in such great stress?â Since I have no the answer, I come to here. Is it possible to transfer to other school to learn architecture after sophomore, just like what I talk about above? How many possibilities I have? THANKS everyone who is willing to help me!! PS: Please forgive my poor English writing skill and grammatical mistakes.

Answer:
Almost all US universities allow transfer students after the sophomore year so that is not the problem although you will have to compete for entry with all the other applicants. Not having a portfolio is not huge problem since most high school graduates don't have that either. Depending on your finances, the bigger issue may be that it will take you an additional 4 to 4.5 years to finish since you don't have any architecture studio classes completed to date. Most (good) undergraduate architecture degrees in the US are 5 years in length. Your English is very adequate by the way.
