You need to know 3 things: 1. "Content is king". Having good ideas for content (infographics, article, blogs, resources, on-site, video, pictures/photos) and the knowledge to create it (proper grammar, skills with graphic software) will make you valuable. 2. Marketing skills. You need to be able to find what people are searching for, how to pick those who are interested in your product/service and how to present it to them, so they will convert from web users to clients. 3. Program language, HTML, CSS are all good to have in your skill set. To make a great website you'll need a little bit of all. For me - these are the top 3 skills a good SEO must have. Everything else is a bonus, but these 3 are fundamental.

1. Start with the basics of SEO . A good place to start is the SEO starters guide by Google. 2. Once you are done with the basics, go through the Google Webmasters guidelines and the Webmasters blogs to learn about Google's expectations from a website 3. Take up a small site to optimize, set up Google Analytics Tracking and start optimizing the site as per your understanding and track the results to check your progress. 4. Try different tactics and make your website as user friendly and informative as you can. Search Engines will start loving you. 5. SEO is a very dynamic field. Lastly, just like with traditional marketing, SEO requires you to understand the needs of your target audience. Do SEO not for the Search Engines but for the end user.
