  The economic future looks bleak. Right now, 400 families contol almost 15 percent of all US wealth. Imagine that! In a nation of 350 million, so much wealth is concentrated into the hands of so few. But it gets worse. The tax rates and rules are such a mess right now that there is no recourse but of manufacturing to flee the US. It's not that the rates are high here -- that is a chimerical fantasy pushed by the right, since the vast majority of corps in the US pay no taxes at all -- it's that they are so byzantine that it's difficult to follow them. Moreover, we have those wealthy families with their fingers in the pie constantly changing the laws via their bought-and-paid for politicians to benefit them. George W. Bush allowed companies like GE to write their own tax laws and lo and behold - GE not only paid no taxes on record revenues and profits, it also got a multi-billion dollar refund. Half the nation's politicians believe it's ok to borrow and spend to fight wars overseas, but it's anathema to fix a bridge or buy food for the poor. The obligations of the country are straining our ability to meet them; cities are going bankrupt under crazy pension and healthcare obligations and we keep adding more to the defense budget at the expense of everything else. We run huge deficits. Our interest payments are the third largest outlay behind defense and social security -- but guess which one the right wants to cut? The bigger issue is jobs and growth. There are fewer and fewer jobs of all kinds yet the population continues to expand, and people need work to survive. What will they do? Lack of jobs is the single biggest cause of revolt. A time is coming, and it is not far off when drastic decisions will need to be made not because we want to - but because we have no other choice.
