For any kind of extended travel, the keys to success are planning and careful budgeting. There are three major categories of expenses for travel: transportation, accommodation and food. If you want to extend your travel as much aspossible, first sort out your destinations and try to go to them in a logical order considering geography and travel costs. Find out approximately how much you will need to spend in each destination, since the cost of living varies a lot. Try to balance out more expensive places with less expensive places. For transportation:  Do some research into what kind of plane tickets make the most sense (a round the world ticket? Individual destination tickets? Open jaws?) What kind of ground transportation makes more sense - trains, with or without passes? Renting or even buying a car? (This depends on the country or region.) Accommodation: Besides youth hostels, consider couch surfing, renting an apartment or something through services like AirBnB, etc. Consider participating in WWOOF http://www.wwoof.org/ for free lodging and food (in exchange for hard work, and probably a great experience too). Food: To save money plan on eating at least half your meals picnic style or cooking your own. In terms of finding work as you go, this depends on the location - in some places it a lot harder, and in most places you'll be doing it illegally with the chance that you'll get caught and deported (E.g. the United States). Consider trying to find some way to work long distance for a company back home, or finding some freelance work you can do on the go. Finally, make sure you have all your visas sorted out, as well as any necessary shots, before you go. Have fun!

There are plenty of existing guides about backpacking on a shoestring budget however, $20,000 USD doesn't sound like a small budget to me. With that amount of cash you should easily be able to visit many of the places you want to. The obvious things to do are: To hitch hike rather than pay for transport. Use Youth hostels rather than hotels. Look for free activities and attractions rather than paid entrance attractions. Cook your own food rather than go to restaurants every day. Eating out can become very expensive. Do some paid work at each location to fund your onward journey.

Choose destinations where US money goes far.  The West Indies aren't cheap for tourists.  Alaska is not expensive on the ground but getting there is not cheap.  Many fishing boats will bring you back (to mainland USA - Seattle) on the Inside Passage if you offer to do work on them - this can be extremely rewarding. Maybe you can take an extended tour of some Asian countries, and do that part in luxury?  In India, you can, if you're smart, travel a whole month on USD1000 - and do this very comfortably as long as you're not buying any last minute air tickets.  Get an Indrailpass and use India's extensive rail network.  It's very cheap. In Nepal, off season is very cheap, and you can shack up at many inns on lovely trekking routes for as little as $10/night, and a whole day's food - huge meals if you need the calories up in the altitudes - will add up to another $10/day.  You get the idea! Sri Lanka is a bit more expensive, but totally worth it. Myanmar is highly welcoming of tourists now, and isn't infested with them. You can hop into Singapore and easily experience Malaysia and Indonesia for about a fortnight each, as long as you don't take up a luxury space in one of their beach resorts. How?  There is far too much variety and choice for any one suggestion for each continent.  However, with the means sorted out already, even figuring out how should be a lovely part of your adventure. Just remember the Southern Hemisphere is heading into summer as the Northern Hemisphere is tilting away from the sun.  Time your trip to take maximum advantage of the most travel friendly weather there.  Of course, for destinations close to the Equator, not much changes in this regard.  Happy travels!!

I have meet a few travelers that work as free lance programmers or web designers. There are other works you can do on Internet that allow you to travel and work at the same time. Other than above mentioned suggestions for food, accomondation, and transportation, you need to consider costs of visa. For certain countries it may cost over 100USD. Visa costs can quick add up.

you can definitely fit in the budget, please note that most of the funds will go on travel and accomodation. I have Traveled extensivelly through Europe, Asia, and Africa.  I have used http://couchsurfing.com ( couchsurfing com ) in many of my backpacking trips. The best way to meet genuine people and get to know the local culture. Hostels are also a good options but will eat away your funds. Good luck, will be an awesome adventure.
