Is a career in marketing a good choice?

What are good ways to make a career choice among consulting, general management and marketing?

• I am a B. Tech. from IIT and came to IIM without any work experience. Currently, I am in first year and applying randomly to various companies for summer internship as I really don't know what I want to do. Please help me make a sound career choice. What factors should be taken into consideration before deciding. Or how to go about it?

• Answer:

  First get clear on what you want.  Think about what you want your lifestyle to look like and do a little “daydreaming.”  What does an ideal look like?  Where are you working, living, etc.  Are you in an office?  Is it yours?  Someone else’s?  Are you traveling?  Then start working through the details that will allow that ideal dream life to be possible.  Also look at your talents and strengths.  How do you want to use them and how do they apply to this dream lifestyle?  The more clear you get, the easier it will be to make the decisions to support your dream job.  Good luck!
