How do you create a Non-Profit Organization at the least costly?

Is hedge fund manager Julian Robertson right Apple probably doesn't have great leaders because Steve Jobs was a "mean" guy and "How can you create a great organization of people and be that mean a person?"?

  • "I came to the conclusion that it was unlikely that a man as really awful as I think that Steve Jobs was, could possibly create a great company for the long term. I just don't believe bad guys do well in the long run," "How can you create a great organization of people and be that mean a person?" "There's no question that-and I think if he were still there, I'd still be in it, I think he's one of the great geniuses of the world. But-he's not the kind of guy I think that would develop a long-standing company." [1] Also, what about the team at Pixar? • Answer:

There's a narrative, that comes from movies, stories and newspapers. It goes like this. People are either good or bad.   They are either saints or sinners.  They are geniuses or idiots.  Leaders or followers. This makes everything nice and tidy. It allows us to write stories about heroes and villains. The truth is actually much more complicated.   The caring doctor who beats his wife. The inspiring writer who abandoned her children. The fact is that a person can be both an astonishing talent - who motivates others to produce extraordinary things - and at the exact same time be an objectionable asshole.    It's even possible the two things are connected. To do things, and think things that no one else is doing, it might be necessary to not give a crap about what others think.   And that might just make you a genius and a jerk.

I completely agree with Glyn. Defining a person as 'mean' probably meant that person got on the wrong side of him or found his uncompromising determination (yes that same determination that created one of the greatest companies in the world) hard to deal with. It boils down to opinion, good guy, bad guy, same guy.

I must start with the caveat that I never met Steve Jobs; everything I know about him is from public sources. However, I don't think he was mean. Certainly obsessive; certainly abrupt and undiplomatic; certainly a man who did not suffer fools gladly. As to whether Apple has great leaders, it is unlikely and there is no particular evidence to suggest that they do. Great leaders are few and far between. The vast majority of companies don't have any, at least not in positions where they can make a real difference.
