Where can you get poster frames?

Where can I get a frame for a standard 40" x 13.5" panoramic poster?

  • This is driving me nuts. If you do a Google search for panoramic posters [https://www.google.com/search?q=panoramic+poster+13.5+x+40&tbm=isch] you will see that 40" x 13.5" is a default standard, at least in the US. My son bought one on a recent visit to New York, and he wants to frame it. Can I find a ready-made frame online??? Not a chance. I have tried metric sizes too (1016mm x 343mm). Nothing. Should I be searching for a different size frame? Does anyone supply these things, or do I have to get a custom frame made, for much more than the price of the poster? It seems to me that thousands of tourists must buy such posters as souvenirs, bring them home from the States, and then find that no one sells frames. Any ideas?

  • Answer:

In your circumstances, and for mine own Martin Guitars poster, I went to the local goodwill/charity/opshop and looked for a glazed frame. Then I used a $3 can of black gloss spray paint to turn it to the desired colour, used the same on the backing panel, and mounted the poster equidistant, top to bottom, side to side. All you need to choose is a frame a bit bigger than the poster -- the actual size won't matter, honestly -- sort out your colours, and remember to apply paint in several light coats to avoid runs. That's it; the rest is frippery. Spray glue from the art shop  (if you're not using a mount; see below) to stick the poster to the back panel -- get the light stuff that's re-positionable so you can free the poster later if you want. A lot easier than I expected, to be honest, and looks quite professional, to my surprise. If you really want to go flash, your local picture framers will probably cut a 'matte' from thick card in a range of colours for a price smaller than you'd expect, but probably more than the cost of the frame. Measure the glass size and the poster size, allow for the hole in the card to be, say, 10mm smaller than the poster, to give you an overlap, and centre the hole all directions.
