What are good ways to how to think in straightforward, logical manner?
-
For a very long time, in interactions with people in my jobs and at school I always got complaints about arriving at cumbersome solutions and not thinking 'straight', i.e. arriving promptly and at the point to the heart of matters or for not 'just following the orders as told'. right now I lost a job opportunity that I was looking forward very much to because of that: they said that my code solution (professional programmer here) was too cumbersome and the presentation was suboptimal. How can I learn to think straight and avoid these traps?

Answer:
First, a health hazard: what I am going to say is going to be contradicting with most of the other responses. Controversial at best, my opinion must be taken with caution. I suppose you are one of the "geeks" at school / work. I suppose you can always think of issues more academically and thoroughoutly than most of your colleagues can think, and, more often than not, more than they can comprehend. I suppose you often have the urge to explain your rationale to support your intelligent solution / suggestion / idea; and to explain your rationale, you feel you have to give them the necessary background knowledge; and by explaining the background, your communication is deemed cumbersome and non-straightforward. If what I suppose are correct, then you are not alone. Workplaces are full of these unfortunately smart "geeks" who can never be straightforward no matter how hard they try. They would always wonder: "I always speak what I think and do what I believe is correct (and sometimes criticized as not diplomatic enough), why am I still branded as non-straightforward?" Now, this is the controversial part of my opinion -- being seen as straightfroward from your boss/co-workers' perspective and being a straightforward person in life are two very different things. Your boss/co-workers do not care how straightforward you are as a person (well, not when you are making a presentation on your professional code solution). They care only about whether your presentation/solution can answer the questions in their mind. The straightforwardness they expect is to hear something that hit those questions right away. So, here comes the paradox: to be deemed straightforward by your boss/co-workers, you have to communicate in a somewhat non-straightforward manner. Don't just say whatever in your mind; don't just say what you want to say, but try to wear the auidence's hat and think of what they really want to know. Give them the answer. As a rule of thumb, don't bother to go through the knowledge, no matter how much you think they should understand. Statistic shows that most people have a attention span of only a few minutes when listening to a presentation. The chance is that, they would be happy as long as they think their problems/questions are answered. If they doubt the rationale they would ask. And if they ask, congratulation, it means you have captured their attention beyond the bare minimal level. I hope that you feel my suggestion relevant to your situation. The reality is that I have more than once given similar suggestions to my "geeky" subordinates. They all agreed to what I said, but so far I have seen no successful transformation. So, possibly I am not giving the right suggestion at the end of the day. :-)

You may be thinking lot more than required. Wanting to give more solution and want others to pick whichever solution they want to, or afraid of saying what you have in mind because it may be trivial or not enough an answer. You need to be clear on what you say. Stick on to one point, no matter whether it is correct or not, universally accepted or not (but be sure you have strong valid reason to stick to it, nobody needs to approve it but you should be convinced with your answer). Take time. Be prepared. Revising whatever you have written/wanted to say will help. In the beginning, write whatever you want to say, by writing you will actually see the words you want to say and will realize whether you really want to say that. Even if it is a debate, writing the points in gist is important. Revising it will make you feel how it will be when you present or does it needs some modifications. Think if somebody is presenting something to you (what you have composed), will you understand what they are trying to convey? is it short and sweet? I mean, even if it is logically correct, if it is taking long time to come to the point, people will be bored. If the first thought that is coming to your mind is not accepted by many people so far, don't tell out the first thought instantly. Just give thought for a moment, rephrase it in simpler words what you want to say (can be in your mind) and then present it to others. People nowadays want everything simple. With respect to code, we have something called design, which is nothing but writing the steps in plain English. First of all come out with a design (can be in the interview itself, it will impress them even more). It should be convincing for you that every step you have written is of some importance. When you translate it into code, make sure you don't write unwanted steps (something which will change the requirement/design with additional steps).

WE ARE WHAT WE THINK WE ARE: 1. Others see in us what we think of ourselves. 2. How you think determines how you act and how others react to you. 3. Look important: it helps you think importantly. 4. Dress right. It always pays. 5. The sharper you look, the sharper you will be. (A pencil, when sharpened, has a clearly defined point and writing is easily read, but a dull pencil is just thatâdull.) 6. Pay twice as much and get half as many. For example, two fine suits are much nicer, last longer, and look better than four cheap ones. 7. If you think of yourself in poor situations, that is what you will get. 8. Think of yourself as sharp, clean, together, intelligent, informed, and interesting, and that is what you will be. 9. In short: Practice uplifting self-praise, not belittling self-punishment. Think more of your self, and there is more of you. 10. Be self-improving in academics, family, and friends. Make progress in changing bad habits, eliminating negativism, and wasting time. What you spend the most time on is âwhat and who you are going to be.â I have taken this text from one small PDF file named " Positive Attitude" You can down load here : http://changethis.com/14.PositiveAttitude I request you to search for Self and Importance pdf from the same web site and also http://changethis.com/30.03.ReclaimLife ( reclaim your life is the name ) You read these small pdf files you will be a changed person.
