Do I have to take the TOEFL?

When should I take the Graduate Record Examination and TOEFL?

  • I am planning to apply for MS Computer Science in USA for August 2015. As on today, May 4, 2014, I need to plan things for the coming year. First things first, when should I give GRE/TOEFL.. which should I give earlier.. should I shortlist universities now, or after getting over with my GRE ? If it helps, I am working for a software MNC. [Update] Will 2-3 months of preparation be enough for GRE (that I am working also)? What about TOEFL.. (If that helps, my Maths skills and vocab are average) AFAIK, application deadlines for most colleges would be after January 2015.. I heard that earlier application would increase the chances of scholarship, and also that colleges process applications on a first-come-first basis.. If that is true.. am I too late for August 2015 ? Because now, I will have to get a good GRE score at my very first attempt at GRE.. which I am planning around mid July 2015.. AND if I get a bad score, I will have to take a cool-off period of 2 months, and give the exam again in September 2015.. this is a very risky situation since I have to give TOEFL, as well as get my application ready(SOP, transcripts, LOR's).. If that helps, I have not appeared for any GRE like exam like CAT, etc. earlier, so slightly skeptical that I would be able to get a decent score at first attempt..

  • Answer:

IMHO the ideal time to take the GRE and TOEFL is the first week of September. Why ? Because 1. Starting from now, you have a solid 3 month to prepare. 2. If you somehow mess up the GRE for the first time, you can reappear again after the cool-off period of 60 days in the first week of November and still make it comfortably across most deadlines which are sometime (earliest on) in mid - November. Usually schedule TOEFL 15 days after your GRE. That way you are not overwhelmed and yet you will be in the examination temperament so your chances of scoring better is considerably improved.

First thing first, get over with your GRE as soon as possible. Because TOEFL is not big deal if you have attended English Medium school and college. Don't take too much time waiting for the "perfect preparation" . As there is flexibility in both these examinations to take an exam date according to your own comfort, people tend to stretch more and more. Plan for GRE , then TOEFL. Once you are don with these two, perform shortlisting of colleges and apply to them. Always try to apply as early as possible to increase your chances of acceptance. You have plenty of time. For fall 2015, the univs will open their application portal in October-November. Try to apply as early as possible.

First of all, you asked this question on time. You still have enough time if u plan well. 1) when is the best time to give GRE? For you, best time is end of August. Since, you are working, if u devote 2 to 3 hrs daily, u can easily excel. You can join some online courses like http://www.Greedge.com that will help you to study at your own pace with full support from their staff. They will make a very good study plan for you according to ur needs and schedule. Try to read as much as you can and start working on learning words from now on. U can give test once again in November. Its not too late. Although I will keep November option for second attempt only. 2) When should I apply to universities? Deadlines for many universities vary from December to july. So u will have to check each and every university. Dont wait for the deadline. Apply as early as you can but right now u are not at any disadvantage. You should start researching about universities from now on and try to chat with the professors who are working in your interest field. 3) TOEFL is a very easy exam and one can excel with just one week's preparation. You need not worry abt it. Attempt it after your gre. 4) SOPs LORs are needed at much later stage and ur priority is gre. Although u have enough time And CAT is much more difficult than GRE and it doesn't matter if u have prepared for any exam before. It's an aptitute test and u need to know only basics. As I mentioned earlier, u can get very good basic knowledge by joining greedge. I hope I have answered all your queries.
