Is it possible to do MS in computer science from the top colleges in US, without having much accomplishments in under-graduation?
-
I did my under-graduation(B.E) in Computer Science from a State government engineering college in India which is affiliated to AICTE. I have worked on non-academic projects like making commercials and websites as a freelancer, I have a very average overall degree percentage of 62%(my college does not give CGPA), with some backlogs. My final year project was research oriented, but due to lack of resources and motivation, I could not push it to a level, where I could publish a paper or so. I still continue my freelancing work and have recently started contributing to Open Source projects, whatever I have learnt or have done till now, I have done it by my own passion and zeal. I learn from the internet, G+ communities, forums, official documentations and I still love to read research papers in CS (a habit I started with when I was working on my final year project). Here are my questions: 1) If I appear for GRE and if I clear the cut-offs set by the top universities, what is the probability that I will make it into the CS masters programs in some top universities? I do not dream of getting into Stanford, Harvard, Princeton, Caltech, Mit or CMU, any college in the rest of the TOP 25 will do. 2) What can I do now to further increase my chances of getting into these colleges? [Not a question, but a request] 3) I would be greatly motivated if someone (who had a similar situation as that of mine) did his/her masters in CS in these universities would like to share his/her story.

Answer:
You can still get into top universities by working hard. Try to make your profile stronger. You are working as a freelancer, try to make this your strong point. You can make some good applications and showcase them. You can also try to get into research by writing some papers in your field of interest.
