Why is South Korea Prime Minister resigning over the ferry disaster which is quite remote from his official duties?

  • As a foreigner, I find it very puzzling. While I am all for accountability, isn't the ferry disaster rather remote from the PM's official duties? To be fair, what could he have done to save the victims after the disaster happened? Was he under pressure to step down? Pardon my skepticism as a non-South-Korean. For example, US Health Secretary Kathleen Sebelius resigned over the problems of the Obamacare website. Few would say she was directly responsible for the problems, there were probably hundreds of middle managers between her and the contractor. But she's expected to take the fall as the top dog. yes, he was very likely under pressure to resign. he was booed and someone threw a water bottle at him when he announced it, in fact. i think his feeling of responsibility comes from the fact that industrial regulations (which could prevent this sort of thing) are his responsibility as PM. (i'm not sure if you're aware or if it's even relevant, but the vice principal of the high school hanged himself and requested that his ashes be scattered where the ferry sank. i think all of the adults are feeling serious guilt right now)
