How does an undergraduate convince himself to work and research in a nation (India) with few research facilities (labs, research groups, universities) as a long term goal?
-
I guess any active researcher in India would have gone through this dilemma. As research facilities are still immature in a nation as India, is it wise to take a career path of research and stay back in India? Yes there are exemplary people but we do need results to keep us motivated and considering the lack of resources, how does one decide to the leap of faith and follow one's love for research? I need other's viewpoints as to how people convince themselves. I would stay back in India, and I am extremely interested in active research, yet I see so many opportunities to work abroad that it gets hard for me to convince myself. I have done my undergraduate from one of the best universities of my country and the research environment there was depressing. What are good avenues of work that can be explored even in India in computer science?

I don't think you could say that research facilities are lacking in India. There are a number of labs doing excellent work. For example, the Microsoft Research lab in Bangalore regularly publishes in the top conferences in fields like Networking and Programming languages. You should check out . After undergrad, you can work as a Research assistant at MSR for 1-2 years. This will give you a taste of doing research alongside excellent researchers. If you are still interested in research, you can do a PhD and later join a research lab.
