How do I start a career in finance?

What is the best way for someone with a MS in Physics to start a career in Quantitative Finance?

  • I am about to complete my MS Physics in 2 months and wish to work in quantitative finance. What would be a good plan to proceed?

  • Answer:

If you want "best", then go for your Ph.D.  Since banks are looking for physics researchers, they generally don't look at people with physics masters. The other alternatives are a) go through campus hiring.  If your physics masters is from an Ivy League university, they will hire you based on the Ivy League branding or b) get a job as a programmer in a non-financial job and move in later.

Other answers

The two main things you need to learn are: a) learn how to code and b) domain knowledge about financial models. Further - if you have past work experience in the industry - that will add to your credibility as well. Refer to the following post:
