    Ear piercing was taboo and unacceptable in my grandparent's generation, they were horrified that their granddaughters (me and my sister) wanted their ear lobes pierced some 25 years back.  I just took my child to have three holes done in the shell of her ear cartilage and really all I asked her was where she found the idea... completely acceptable now (her father said he'd pay for a nose or eyebrow piercing too! Of course I accused him of hoping to give his father a heart-attack!)
