  • Answer:

The most straight forward way to become a lawyer in the USA is to attend a law school, and earn a J.D. from that law school.  As far as I know, anyone who earns a. J.D. from an accredited U.S. school qualifies to take the bar in any state. Another way, is to earn a law degree in another country, then come to the United States and earn an L.L.M.  I believe NY and CA are the only states that allow L.L.M's to sit for the bar. A third way is to go to an unaccredited law school.  I believe CA is the only state that allows graduates of unaccredited law schools to sit for the bar. Finally, some states allow those with actual experience in the law (with work experience working as an apprentice to an attorney for 4 years) to sit for the bar. Of all the above options, the first and second are really the only relevant ones.  The latter two options might get you the right to practice law in the US, but probably won't get you a job.
