    I would like to set one thing straight at the very beginning . Unless you are extremely talented no-one gets a very high paying job as fresher. Everyone should work their way up the ladder and in due course your job would turn out to be a high paying one. Now coming to the part about mechanical engineer going to software industry. The thing you need to have is good coding skills. These can be developed by practice. There are tons of websites online that provide free courses on programming languages. You could pick any one and start learning and try developing small programs. Assuming you know C/C++ which is covered in most engineering courses these days, you would have a basic knowledge of structure for developing code in other languages like Java, C#. That said every language does have its own set of syntax, and learning it just takes practice and a bit of passion for what you do. If you are still in college, a start would be to work on creating small apps for phones that use android or windows.
