What to major in: biotech or computer science?

What is the best minor for a major in Computer Science?

  • Hello. I am starting college this fall and am planning to major in Computer Science. I thought I should go for a minor as well. What would be the ideal minor for a Computer Science major? I heard math and Computer Engineering were good ones. Also, will a minor give you an "edge" in the workforce? I plan on getting a job as a software/web developer. Thanks!

  • Answer:

I would say that computer science is a tool that empowers you to accomplish something in another domain. What are you passionate about? Remember what Steve Jobs said about the importance of liberal arts. If you're interested in dazzling apps or consumer software products then why not do something you're interested in like music or art or creative writing (hint: if none of these things interest you then your products will probably not be very interesting). On the other hand, you could take a minor in a hard science if you're interested in computational science (such as bioinformatics) but that's a no-brainer. If you're interested in pure research or maybe finance math will help you sharpen your mind and formalize your ideas. Thirdly, you only have 4 years at college...why not take something you've always been fascinated in? You're never going to be learning full time again. So to sum up I guess my answer would be anything at all will work to your advantage, as long as you can give a good reason for it. In a world of code-writing automatons it might be just the thing to set you apart.

Math would appeal to me, and I believe it is the most relevant field to programming in the sense of giving an edge, but it is also a question of what you are drawn to personally. A2A. Best is a superlative adjective, and since computer science is a very employable degree in todayĆ¢€™s job market, any minor you choose will be acceptable - in short there is no best.I do not recommend a business minor per se because if you are interested in becoming a manager, I recommend an MBA.

I think it depends on your specialization and what you wanna do in the future. If you want to do machine learning and artificial intelligence, mathematics or statistics could be a great choice. If you want to specialize in web engineering, mobile application design. Graphical design or psychology is great for your future work if you work as full stack or front end web developer. If you wanna focus on systems side etc, do some electrical engineering courses. If you like robotics, mechanical engineering is also a great choice. If you don't want do anything technical after graduation, a management minor could help a lot.
