    Time to market for the companies you listed runs the gamut. It also varies widely with regard to complexity. For software, 1.0 releases take longer than X.0 releases, ERP systems take longer than websites. Hardware is the same, first versions of a technology take longer than improved versions. The question needs to be much more specific to provide any meaningful answers. Update: The above was flagged for needing clarification. The variations are so wide that I can safely give you a range of 3-48months, assuming you do not include R&D time.

I agree that the answer depends greatly on the scope of the development project.  However there are some rules of thumb.  Some companies will try to do 1 major and 1 minor release per year for complex matrixed enterprise software systems.  However in my experience at Avaya, and watching Microsoft, major releases will take even longer than that.  We could spend 2 months in planning, 4 - 8 months in development, 2 months in sv/alpha, 3 months in beta.  Note that some of this time is overlapping.. but think of it as a year for a major release. More complex projects can take longer, and dot releases can be 4-6 months. Note that this doesn't relate at all to cloud projects which can be as quick as a couple months.  They can start to get more complex when you start layering in a lot of interop / system test.
