Startup: Good idea to have promotional contest when you just launched?
-
I'm about to start my own online business. I am an illustrator for book covers, posters and other things (mainly print). I was thinking about having a promotion, where potential customers add a summary of their book they want me to create a cover design for. Other people could vote on the idea, and after a certain period, I'll design the one with the most votes for free. Should I do it a few months after I launched to make sure enough people will enter (because else it looks kinda like I can't even get enough participants in a free contest) or is it good to do it from the start? I'll also use adwords and/or facebook ads to attract participants.

Answer:
Short answer: Yes. It's always good to run a contest. Longer answer: No, it's not always good to run a contest. The only real bad time to run a contest is right after you just ran a contest. Other then that you can safely run a contest and exxpect to have some entrants for it, as long as you focus on the incentive and on promotion. The best apps for running these types of contest are (in my opinion of course): http://www.wishpond.com http://www.rafflecopter.com http://www.gleam.io (in no order) After you get your contest setup, the most important thing is going to be content promotion. See how here: https://referralrock.com/blog/small-business-giveaways/ I would try to some of these strategies: Paid Facebook Ads - They give a good targeting system that lets you advertise to people who would be interested in your giveaway. Newsletter Distribution - Send out your giveaway to everyone you know and also connect with influencers to try to get them to send it to their subscribers as well. Influencer out reach - Go for blog mentions on people who would benefit from having this giveaway for their audience. Friends / Family - Get them to share your giveaway, these people will help you expand your reach immediately. Forums - There are most likely forums where your target market is that you can post in for free and get some more entrants. Reddit - Same as forums but in a different medium. Local flyers - Flyers might seem old school but they work! They're also pretty cheap!
