What does a copy editor normally do?

What is the most frustrating thing about being a copy editor (sub-editor)?

  • Answer:

In no particular order: Reporters who don't proof their own drafts. Shows a lack of pride in their own work and dependence on editors to wipe their ass. Unfamiliarity with the style guide. Proves reporters don't read the newspaper they work for or care enough to learn its voice. Tardiness. Deadlines are there for a reason and when they aren't met it makes everyone's job harder. Censorship. Few ordeals are more exhausting than trying to convince an overly sensitive party watchdog not to kill a story or vast swathes of it moments before going to press. Starting stories with quotes. Unless the pope uttered an expletive, it probably won't work - and now I have to write you a lede. Other staff meddling with a final edited story without consulting the editor. Changes get made for a reason. Cliches. Save them for fairy tales. Lighthearted stories with headlines that aren't pun-friendly. Not enough coffee.
