How can a person find their gift/talent?
-
What if you feel that you are not good at anything at all? Similar but different questions: (this question uses a different definition of talent that implies we have multiple talents, rather than just primary gift/talent, as this question does) (talks about how one can discover talents in anyone, not just how an individual can discover their talents, which may yield different answers) (relevant to teenagers) (relevant to people in their late 20's)

Answer:
Don't improve yourself. Let enjoyment improve you. But if you don't know where to start, then start from the beginning. Nobody likes playing Mary Had a Little Lamb on the piano. Beginning stages are usually boring by default. But if you practice consistently for a whole year, a year from now you'll have been playing for a whole year. Three years from now, you'll have been playing for three whole years. Those sentences sound redundant, but they're powerful. "Manhood is patience. Mastery is nine times patience." The key to persevering this way is enjoying the process. This chart maps the way to enjoyment ("Flow" = enjoyment): If what you're doing is too easy, you'll get bored; increase your challenge. If what you're doing is too difficult, you'll get frustrated; increase your skills. Enjoyment is all about that sweet spot in between.

If you read Blink, you will realize that people need 10,000 hours of practice to be good at anything. Have you practiced for 10,000 hours yet? If not, start practicing. If you are a beginner, start by incorporating daily 20 minute practice sessions. Then bump it up to 30 minutes a day. The more you practice the better you become.

I like to call this the gravity method. Free yourself for an hour everyday, for a week. Sit in a comfy chair free of any distractions and let your mind drift off. Make a note of all the things that you think of in a paper and at the end of the week look at this paper, the most frequently occurring thoughts in this paper hold the clue to your gift/talent. I call it the gravity method, cause I believe that when you are relaxed, your mind is free of any distractions, negative emotions it GRAVITATES towards your passion.

Talents as they say, can't be taught. They have to be discovered. The best time to discover your talents (at least the basic ones) is when you are young. Not that any time is bad, but its better to know beforehand. Problem is you don't exactly understand how badly you want your talent back then. :D Here comes the role of parents. If you are a parent, you must make sure that your child gets an atmosphere where he is allowed to play and participate. This way, the child has to do nothing but just go on with life, participating in competitions at school, playing in the evenings, etc. and soon he knows where he's winning. Easy. The bad time is when you are an adult, already qualified and you realize you don't know what you're good at. Now the goal is to find that talent ASAP. You are late, its high time. Do it today. Stop thinking money, that shortens your thinking radius. Assume that you have more than enough money, now ask yourself what you want to do today or in future years to come? If you're still clueless, brainstorm. Take classes, join your friends in their day of activities, do that thing you saw on TV that day. Above all, don't give up, your talent is around. :) All the best.

Well let me start with I still believe everyone has a talent or gift. You need to find out what your good at is the real game. But notice one thing , sometimes your passion about something may not necessarily be your real gift. Just because people like something , doesn't mean your good at it naturally. Yes its true that with true passion and sincere hard work you may become really good in what you like. But that may still not be something your the best at. Its simple , having a god gifted talent about something . and being really good at something all due to your hard work. are 2 different things. So yes there are times when you may be good at something you don;t like and vice versa. This is when you need let your ego down and understand this difference. Some people stay at that one point in that one thing they like even though they may not be the best at it . but since it comes to their ego ,they keep trying and half your life goes on it. I am not saying you shouldn't try , of course you should , everyone should . till the point where they really really like it despite of the number of attempts. But at a point when its only about ego or jealousy as in 'why can't I be good at this like he is and i am way more passionate about this thing than he is. why why why?' The moment this question comes into your head , you need to realize your passion is your passion and that's it. Try other things and if your good at something you don;t like and it's just a god gifted talent , try to see it in a prospective , atleast try , there might be a reason you have a talent. As for people who think i am not good at anything at all. Either you will find it eventually because everyone does. but if you don;t then that is your gift. As crazy as it sounds but yeah that maybe your god gifted talent. your a guy kinda good at everything but maybe not the best at one . That's much better because then that means god has divided your talent in different things. So overall , just look for your passion ,. also look for your god gifted talent which maybe different from your passion. Keep your options open and you will find your niche.

So often we don't realise our strengths are unique to us, because they come to us so naturally. The best thing is to look at yourself from multiple angles, and use different personality and strength tests to get a rounded picture. I like the following 8 categories - there are ways to dig deep into each of these. Skills Temperament Reasons Experiences Networks Goods & assets Traits (character) Heel (weaknesses) I wrote this very detailed article that gives step-by-step instructions.http://purposefulpeople.net/find-what-are-your-strengths/

Just expose yourself to as many different situations as possible. You can't know if you are a great dancer if you never go to a dance class, or know if you are a natural leader if you never join any groups. Read widely, volunteer, take classes, intern, think about what tasks you already like, take personality tests and career tests that seek to identify how the two link up.

The funny thing about innate talent is that you can have many or none. I think it's almost irrelevant having it. What's relevant is if and how you nurture it and use it. I have many talents. But so what. It's my satisfaction in how I use them that determines their worth to me. When I came to this realization recently, I realized my greatest talent is that I learn things easily which I find so freeing. That i don't have to pursue everything just anything I'm interested in. I used to put pressure on myself because others expected a certain level of ambition from me. I used to be an overachiever. Now I could give a toss. Like some already said, some talents are not as easily defined or "popular". I also believe you can learn almost anything and it's the degree to which you improve that marks how "talented" you are or not. And if you're not talented or gifted, does it matter if you just enjoy it?

When you were born, the Earth was rotating and revolving in the solar system. This huge ball of enormous mass pulled you towards itself. Hence you didn't fly off after your birth. There were other planets too in the solar system, btw. Some were small, while others were huge. They all had a gravitational influence on the planet Earth and its inhabitants. People understood the influence of those planets and acted accordingly. Unfortunately, you were born in an environment where people neither understood astrology nor believed in it. And because of which you'll probably be spending a decade or more of your life trying to figure your 'gift/talent' and posting questions like these.

Something that has worked for me.. If you can explain your field of interest/passion to someone else using analogy of their own field, then that is something of your calling.. For eg, i love computers and all things related to it, i taught my grand father who is a civil engineer to use the internet and the basic computers, by relating actions in the construction industry..so the foundation of the building became the CPU, the different construction activities happening on top of it became the processes, cement became the input, building drawings were the softwares which showed how things would be, the building was the output..so on.. I find it useful technique to have.. The other thing is how to discover one, for it you need to explore everything and get to a hello world level of the thing, see if your mind tells you to explore further..eg, guitar? Learn to strum and play a simple song, swimming learn to float without support, tennis learn to serve or face volleys, driving get till 70kph and shift all gears..
