What are some of the best thought-provoking non-fiction books (not old school) written by authors from countries like China, Korea, Singapore, Germany, Russia, Middle East, etc?

When I look at my book shelf, its mostly books written by USA/UK/Indian writers. Also when I look at different book suggestions around the web, most of them are from USA/UK origin books. Not sure if there is bias(?) - Neither I am saying its good or bad. Wouldn't it be nice to get different perspective? eg as far as I know China is doing well, it would be nice to learn from them through their own writings(example their startup stories). Last time en route to USA, I visited HK airport and visited all books shops to see any interesting new business/non-fiction books but I could not find any(may be i missed). I read couple of old but still interesting chinese books (like 'the art of war' by Sun Tzu) but I am looking for somewhat newer generation books. Any suggestions?

I will provide Russian book ideas. There is a huge amount of amazing literature written by the Russian authors; the limiting factor is the availability of quality translations in English. Let me offer a few options to start with, trying to cover various topics. If you like them, I'll be happy to suggest more. http://www.amazon.com/And-Suddenly-Inventor-Appeared-Inventive/dp/0964074028 Written by Genrich Altshuller, a "Russian Einstein". He analyzed 140,000 of the most significant world patents, and distilled core principles that successful inventors consistently use to solve "impossible" innovation problems. His main thesis is that innovation does not have to rely on luck and "genius", it can be taught and done methodically. Many cool real life examples. http://www.amazon.com/The-Gulag-Archipelago-Volume-Investigation/dp/0061253715/ref=pd_sim_b_2 âBest Nonfiction Book of the Twentieth Centuryâ (Time magazine) Written by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, Nobel-prize winner in Literature. You won't believe what people can endure... A must-read for anyone who takes democracy and freedom for granted.

Try the Cities of Salt series by Saudi writer Abdulrahman Munif. It tells the story of the coming of oil and riches to an unidentified Middle Eastern kingdom. Although no names are specified and no exact historical moment was portrayed, it was close enough to bother the monarchs. Sorbonne-educated Munif went into self-exile as a result and his books are still officially banned in the Kingdom. It is non-fiction disguised as fiction. The books are lyrical -- and very well translated by Peter Theroux, brother of travel-writer Paul -- and an utter pleasure to read.
