Can I get a decent job with a 3rd degree?

How can a third year finance student network effectively so as to get a job in an investment bank?

  • I am doing a double major in Economics and Finance. It's a 4 year degree. I have an interest in the financial markets. But I don't have any tangible achievements, other than decent grades. I study in the best management school of my country. I have been browsing Quora on questions like "how to get a job in investment banking and hedge funds?" And one thing that most people have emphasized is networking. I am a little introvert and I don't have the slightest clue on how to approach people in IB industry or how to communicate with them and why'd the people working in IB want to talk to a 3rd year student. Any tips?

  • Answer:

First, get some business cards printed up. The main people that you should network with are people a year or two ahead of you in school.  When people are looking for work, listen to what they have to say and offer congratulations/sympathy.  When they graduate keep in touch with them and see where they end up.  They can give you a lot of information over who is hiring, who isn't, and what the job market is like. Second, your school should already have a network system called career services.  Aside from that, just attend events, and hand out business cards.  People that are much older (like me) can't offer much in the way of immediate job prospects, but we can offer stories and (possibly incorrect, possibly useless) advice.
