How to Unfollow A Blog?

How should I go about starting a blog for a job search?

  • I am third year mechanical engineering student at the University of Mumbai. I am interested in the fields of renewable energy, environmental engineering, design engineering, thermal engineering, programming! I would like to start writing blog posts about these topics. I would like to have a technical blog where I will write technical articles. I am not much interested in writing news articles about what's happening here or there in these fields. But I am confused what should I write about? Suppose,  I am learning new software, say Solidworks, should I write tutorial posts as I learn or about some projects I have done using Solidworks. Now, consider field like renewable energy. Should I write about theoretical concepts of renewable energy field. And that information already exists online on many other sites. Because, some of my friends who are from computer science, they blog about new code they write. But for field like mechanical engineering, Its not possible to continually do something practically and blog about it. So can you please advise on how should I go about.? What should I blog about? Also I have personal website and blog where I talk about my hobbies, history, and general topics about awareness. Should I write my technical blog on the same blog or Should have a new blog? P.S. : I need to work hard to improve my writing skills!

[WARNING: LONG READ AHEAD. BUT READ IF YOU ARE SERIOUS ABOUT YOUR BLOG] I believe you have already answered some of your most important questions. In the day of possibly more blogs being born than pay-checks withdrawn, the least someone can do is recreate already existing content. And secondly, you have more or less decided on your broad niche. Next step is to hone it. Let me try and put in a simple ToDo list if I can: Find your passion >> then find your exact niche: Seems obvious? Let me tell you from my experience that this is where 9/10 blogs phase out and die in one or two posts or worse, remain mediocre.  Renewable energy is your passion among other things. While it is not entirely impossible to find a fresh or unique niche within this (mainly because all I saw was boring "How it works" blogs on the subject) -- like for instance, renewable energy in a campus environment focused blog, etc., but as you rightly said, it is more difficult to create a constant flow of posts (read my point on post frequency). My solution to this would be: find a niche that is common enough to find first: a) at least potentially or theoretically 2 to 5 hundred people in the world who is creating if not similar but similarly inclined content online. b) An audience big enough to consume your content - identify potential numbers, identify where these consumers gather (forums, messaging boards, facebook groups even?) c) Put numbers against these people. Don't say "there are roughly around x people". Find out how many. It is OK to say "about 350" content creators but not "maybe 200 to 400". Why do this and how it solves your "fresh post a day" problem: The idea is about collaboration. Have conversations. I am sure you will be able to get at least 5-10 posts out on your own. When you are nearing the end, NOT AT the end of your blog post ideas, reach out to these people. While your blog might be too small for someone to do a guest post on your blog, at least 20 of the potential 200 will be willing to "TALK". Give them a call, send them an email. Talk about your ideas on renewable energy. Show them your posts, discuss concepts. "INTERVIEW" them and ask their permission to quote them. This will do two things to your blog (BOTH EXTREMELY VITAL) a) give your blog a angle of international collaboration, outreach and point-of-view. b) it is in every interest of the person you talked to, to share the post you did about him and your conversations. No better Return-Of-Investment to start with. Of Course, remember to target people who have at least some influence in the community they reside in. Frequency of your posts: This one is vital - give your readers something to come back to. While there are oodles to speak about here, the most basic and important thing a beginner blogger can do, is give consistency  Your readers won't come back if they have no idea about when you are likely to write again. As you can see, I can go on and on about "Best practices". But guess I have ranted enough. To answer your other specific questions: Definitely create a new blog. See, if you were going to blog about the nice cats you see in your college campus, it can go with your personal hobby blog. But your serious readers about engineering or energy won't care much for the other content that lives on your personal blog. I would recommend http://wordpress.com over other platforms. While you won't have as many themes and plugins to play around with, wordpress will give you the community that will be helpful in the first few days. HAVE FUN WITH YOUR BLOG!
