What is scope of international marketing?

Does marketing field have a scope in today's world?

  • I am doing my Bachelor of Business Management and i have taken up MARKETING field as my elective. I am interested in marketing and i am planning to do my MBA in marketing field only. But i heard that marketing has no scope in today's world and students with MBA degrees in marketing are unemployed. Is that even true? After hearing things like i get scared if i did a mistake by taking up marketing because everyone wanted me to take Finance but I was interested in marketing so i took marketing as my elective. I just wanted to know if the unemployment part is true or not and also i wanted to know the job opportunities for a marketing student.

I'm not sure what the market is like where you are but keep in mind anyone who tells you to do something because they think its more prestigious is giving you misguided advice.  You should pursue whatever you are interested in. I would consider coupling marketing with some classes in social media networking and data analytics - if you have a background in marketing via social media and interpreting data you wouldn't have difficulty finding work. If finance doesn't appeal to you don't stress it - there are enough finance D-bags out there, but that's just my particular bias.

Marketing is always needed, show me a company without a marketing plan.  The thing is with social media, companies like Groupon, Angies list, and the internet in general, marketing has been evolving faster and faster.  If you get a direct mail piece for XYZ company you can google it and know lots about the company.   Plus what is going to make you stand out over the other companies.  Anyone can offer Product X, but why is your Product X better?  Or why should I watch your youtube video or like  your page? Why should my company choose vender X over vendor XYZ for my business needs?  My point is marketing is always needed.  Do you know that Schlitz used to be one the the top beers?  The CEO decided that they were to good, and didn't need to continue to implement a marketing plan.  And today they are known as a crappy beer.  Here is the thing about those with and emphasis in marketing.  First it is an "easy degree."  I am not sure what university you are attending but at mine it was the degree for those who wanted a business degree, but didn't want to do a bunch of math.  Thus there was a LOT of marketing majors.  This then saturates the market.  Finance and Accounting are the hardest, while marketing, and general business are the easiest.   I know a few marketing majors who are not working in marketing.  Here is why.  Almost every entry level marketing job wants two years of experience.  If I was you I would get the bachelors and then get a job going, and if they are a good employer they will pay for your masters.  Thus you don't have that debt, and no job prospects. So how do you get into the field? 1.  Create a plan 2.  Start marketing yourself (create a personal marketing plan) 3.  Find a small business owned by a family member and see if they will let you be their marketing director 4.  Create a portfolio of your work 5.  Create a case study of some marketing thing your did that can be easily looked at and handed to potential employers.  6.  Start looking for a job well before you graduate, don't do what most students do and wait until a few months before graduation, or even after graduation. 7.  Create business cards and start handing them out. Now that you have done this.  You go to a campus job fair you junior year.  You know a few companies you would like to work for.  You approach them and talk. You then show them your case study, and tell them about the situation, issues, the solution you came up with, and why.  Smile! Then give them your business card and resume.  Also tell them that you have a portfolio of your work that you would like to share with them.  You then get a call for an interview for an internship.  You show up and show them your portfolio of various marketing based things you have done.  Have spreadsheets, advertising, plans, screen shots, make it look good.  The interview will not have the time to analyses your work, so it needs to look good.  But, they might want to look at in more detail so be prepared to leave it. Now how does this look in compassion to that student who hands a resume to a person at the career fair. A few other ideas: Read business books of all sorts.  The library is free. Network, hand out those business cards. Get out in the community, check into joining the Young Professionals in your area.
