How can online education be used to improve high school curriculum?

Answer:
We've had a few different articles recently about how MOOCs are used by high school teachers to promote college readiness and career exploration, as well as prep for placement and admissions exams. There's the obvious way that these materials, if high quality, support the learning objectives of the H.S. curriculum. But what's really interesting might be less tangible -- how incorporating these college-level or career oriented resources can make real in the student's mind a variety of possible futures. Sitting in on a MOOC is low-stakes but is still a pretty good glimpse of what studying a given topic in college will be like. It can be a wake-up call for the kind of work that will be expected, and it can be inspiring also. I think it's possible who has sniffed at their Subject X curriculum could have the light bulb go on when they see how that subject is treated in a college class. I'd start with these two articles to illustrate these ideas: http://moocnewsandreviews.com/developmenta-math-mooc-college-readiness-uw-lacrosse-part-1/ http://moocnewsandreviews.com/leap-college-readiness-gap-best-moocs-for-high-school-seniors/ Robert Editor, MOOC News and Reviews

Find the best, I mean the very best online education out there and make it available to schools and students. But here is the trick. It can't be just layered on top of what already exists. Time must be cut out of the day for the New online methods to be used. For something New Century to be added something old must be gotten rid of. And the New online methods must be totally committed to. Meaning both the teachers and the students must buy in and be willing to both benifit and possibly suffer from, the New methods. What I mean is, it must be possible to fail. Online methods will not work unless the students believe that failure is a possibility. If they are allowed it game the system and stil pass then to many will.
