If emergency was really the darkest period for our democracy post independence why it had a only transient effect on future of Congress party?

    Short Answer: TINA Factor. There was no alternative. The "Bhanumati Ka Kumbha(motley crew)" assembled by JP Narayan in 1977 had too many factions, contradictions and ambitions within their group to give a sustainable government. Pathological hatred: Jan Sangh(BJP)/CPI (They hated each other). So did the Lohiaites. They were always at loggerheads over RSS membership.. I will be PM: Charan Singh(Father of flip flopper Ajit Singh) wanted to be PM. So did Morarji Desai. So did Jagjivan Ram. Jagjivan Ram's son got caught up in a sex-scandal, so that put paid to his chances. Charan Singh was enticed,made PM and then dumped by the congress. Effectively, after a lot of Backstabbing, the Govt. finally fell in 1979.   The wicked Indira Gandhi was seen as strong and decisive by the public and voted in while the factionalists were put out to pasture on the opposition benches for the next decade before a similar failed experiment.
