What do you know about entrepreneurship?

Do you know of any progressive colleges focused on entrepreneurship and/or computer science? If not, how do I find my ideal college?

  • 1) My grades are poor, but I've done various projects. I'm a talented programmer for my age. Are there any good colleges, focused on entrepreneurship/CS that would accept me? 2) If you do not know of such a fit for me, how do I personally seek out to find one? I feel that with the numerous colleges in the United States, it would be difficult to find my perfect fit; a needle in a haystack. It seems to me that college tours just let you look through one handful at a time of that haystack. I'm trying to find a college based on qualitative characteristics. I may find a school that I somewhat like, but there will most certainly be another school out there that would be much better for me.

  • Answer:

Babson College is very focused on entrepreneurship, and may be a little less competitive to get into than the CS programs famous for entrepreneurs like MIT and Stanford (your strong interest fit may help as well - disclaimer: I went there, and though everyone talks about it, I never took any entrepreneurship classes). You may also want to check out this list: http://www.entrepreneur.com/topcolleges/undergrad/0.html Many of those are not famous or brand name colleges, which means you have a good shot of getting in (and the education is good, with quality focused in an area you care about). As a bonus, many of them are very reasonably priced, and graduating with less debt will improve your ability to be an entrepreneur afterwards. I am not as familiar with the CS side, but I would bet that there are many quality state research schools that have very good education, even if they're not famous. You could even check out the websites of the schools above, to see what they offer. Worst case, you can start at a community college, and transfer (and that's not a very bad case). Many schools accept transfers, and if you're capable of college-level work you can get some general education requirements out of the way, save some money, and be competitive at a better school (though the super elites might still be a challenge).
