What is the best time to apply for a job at Google?
-
I work in the industry. What is the best time to apply to Google, considering hiring cycles (what time of the year google is hiring), busy-ness of interviewers (e.g. during university recruiting time), etc. to maximize your chances of getting hired.

Answer:
Visit http://www.google.com/jobs and search for positions that interest you. The best time to apply is the day you find one you know you'll excel at. There's really no other "best time." There's lots of advice about getting hired at Google, but it comes down to this: 1. Be passionate about what you do, and be amazing at it. 2. If you know a Googler who can articulate the reasons you'd do an amazing job, ask for a referral. 3. Use the interview as an opportunity to show your interviewers why they'd love to have you on their team. Impress them not only with your technical knowledge, experience, and problem-solving skills, but also as a person they'll want to work with. But, most of all, if you want to work at Google, do apply. As often as you like. Many Googlers are hired after their second application, or even later.

It depends on your goals. It sounds like you simply want to maximise your chances of being hired. In that case, I'd suggest applying around September. Google has a habit of freezing hiring at the start of a calendar year. Hiring managers know this, and get into a panic in the last quarter, trying to fill open headcount before it's taken away. However, if you aren't as concerned about your chances of being hired, and want to know the best time overall (eg to get the best job), then you're better off putting effort into understanding the company and finding the right role, monitoring the job site and getting to know people who work there.

I interviewed and worked at Google before. of course there does exist a 'BEST TIME' but It is very hard to predict or know the best time. It depends on your skillset and the corresponding openings in the hiring division. For most of the candidates who do well in interviews, the interview scores are given to be just above the cut off for rejection. So the hiring committee has to choose between very closely scored candidates. If there is no urgent , compelling need for candidates to fill in roles, they would reject all the candidates to prevent a bad hire. But if there are roles they are looking to fill in immediately and if you have the relevant experience and background, even if your interview scores are not stellar you would be selected (assuming no other candidate is more qualified than you in the interview pool in those 2-3 weeks whose interview scores are also close to you, which i guess rarely happens). So ultimately it comes down to whether there is an opening which some team is trying hard to fill in. Looking at google jobs website, One cannot really tell if there is an opening or not..since most of the ads are old and do not often have a one to one correspondence with openings and some job ads are just looking for 'good to have' candidates rather 'needed' candidates.
