How to solve a random yellow-printing problem?

If you could only solve one problem, would you solve the problem of NSA spying or the problem of sexism in the tech industry?

  • Please no clever "here's how I'd solve them both" answers - looking for making hard trade-offs and reasons for those trade-offs.

  • Answer:

Honestly, I have a hard time seeing the demonstrable harm from NSA spying reaching the same level as the demonstrable harm as sexism in the tech industry. Yes, NSA spying touches more people, but 99.9% of them will never be aware of it and very little will come of it. The outlier cases should not be ignored as though they are unharmed, but numerically, as an absolute number, they are a small population. Conversely, the demonstrable harm done to women in the tech industry impacts their earning ability, their ability to provide for their own well being, the wellbeing of their dependants and family members. It is a direct quality of life impact on a significant population. Beyond earning power, the direct results of sexism within the tech industry include forms of abuse and harassment that have physical and psychologically damaging effects to a large population. These are both bad things, but I'm going to be honest: I do work on a regular basis to address sexism in the tech industry (I work in tech) and I do absolutely nothing about NSA spying.
