Inspirational website to have as a homepage?

Is it better for a personal website to have a static landing page with biographical information, or throw the blog right on the homepage?

  • In trying to create a personal web presence that prioritizes the content that viewers will value most, does it make more sense for such a website's homepage to feature biographical/résumé/contact information (the kind of information that one finds on an http://about.me profile)? Or is it more useful to emphasize the most recent blog posts above all else on the homepage?

  • Answer:

This depends on the type of website which you are trying to run. Most people skim through blogs and only read blogs throughly with those that interest them. Then, they add a RSS feed to keep up with it at times. I most certainly do. What grabs me most is the content; when I read the content and I am really into the wordplay, the subject matter, the personality of the page, I dive into this information first. Most people will find that their eyesight gathers to the "meat" of the blog before they even read the "about me" section. For this matter, my homepage is my landing page of my blogger. I have a separate tab for an "about me" section to just highlight my writing only. I find that this keeps the direction that I am aiming for. Sometimes having widgets, sections and other tools on the main landing page for an "about me" section can turn a reader off. Some may consider it pompous, or a driving ego that ensures that not only is there copyright info, contact info and so on on the homepage-but more contact info as well. All credible websites have an about me/contact us section, however.

It also depends on the quality and frequency of the blog. If you post often, and have insightful things to say that you feel offers a unique perspective on your site topic, then a blog on the homepage is probably a great idea. However, if you post just once a week, or less, and you don't have anything interesting or different to say, then keep the blog off the homepage. There's no reason not to link to it from the homepage, but don't put it front-and-center if you don't keep up with it. You can see my site, http://www.upstepweb.com, and how I only post once in a while, but the blog is on my homepage. Take it from me -- this isn't working, and I need to fix that!
