What to expect from a computer science major?

  • Hello. I am currently 17 years old(tested out of 6th grade) and my highschool years are coming to an end. I will be attending college in a few months and I plan on majoring in Computer Science. I love programming and I am comfortable with Java, and I know basic HTML, CSS, JavaScript. I am also in the process of learning Ruby/Ruby on Rails. What will encounter on my journey to getting a CS degree? How can I prepare myself better? Thanks!

    Brush up on your math skills.  Computer science is the study of how to compute things, and as such, the focus is really on the tools that you need to reason about computation.  Stanford's list of their http://csmajor.stanford.edu/Requirements.shtml for a CS degree should give you a pretty good idea of what you can expect, but you should check with whatever school you're attending to get the specifics.

Work on your 'life skills' and by that I mean 'not having a life'. Since you already love comp-sci it will all be a cakewalk unless too many 'distractions' happen. Laundry, food, and transportation must take <2% of your time. Is it just a coincidence that laundry, food, and transportation are free at Google?

Get ready to study hard. By hard, I mean, really really hard. It looks like you already like programming, so you are luckier than most. However, despite your love for programming, expect to say "ENOUGH", probably more than once. Sometimes you will think they are trying to break you, and for most of the time they will be trying to break you. Also note that getting a CS degree is more than programming. Actually, programming is just a tool. You will have to learn much more theory than actual programming. However, is it bad? Do I regret? No! Computer Science is awesome. The things I mentioned come with many other majors as well, but you will have a much higher chance to make impact and yes become rich. Have fun on your journey!
