What's the best travel itinerary for places in France, driving from Paris, for a 4-day holiday?
-
Driving by car. I have not seen any other place in France other than Paris. I prefer a calm place to relax and have a good time with friends.

If it's all driving then you'd probably want to go somewhere that's not too far away from Paris, otherwise you might be spending one day to get there and one day back. So that rules out the south such as Provence for instance. (A way around the distance problem is to go down via TGV (about 2 hours to Avignon, 2 1/2 to Marseille), and rent a car, but I'm going to assume you don't want to do that.) So, for instance you could: Go to the Champagne-Ardenne region and go around visiting the numerous champagne caves, tasting as you go of course and maybe bringing back a few bottles. There are other things to see there too such as the awesome Gothic cathedral in Reims Go to Normandy where there are many towns and villages to visit as well as beautiful countryside. Start in Rouen (another great Gothic cathedral here) and work your way north and west. Go to the Loire valley and explore the many beautiful chateaus, do some wine degustation, etc. Maybe rent bicycles - the terrain is fairly flat and easy. My favorite would be Bretagne (Brittany) though, especially in summer. It feels very different from the rest of France in terms of architecture and landscape. There are many beautiful villages both on the coast and inland, and the seaside ranges from beaches to rocky cliffs with terrific views. In the spring and summer the flowers and foliage are outstanding, since it rains quite a bit here (but not so much that it ruins your holiday). All of these places are very relaxing compared to Paris.

It has a total of 37 sites inscribed in UNESCO's World Heritage List and features cities of high cultural interest, beaches and seaside resorts, ski resorts, and rural regions that many enjoy for their beauty and tranquility . I like 's ideas, and: I' d suggest four different scenarios depending on your tastes, four loops from Paris to Paris with different features to offer: going North and Normandy: Beauvais (Cathedral), Dieppe-Le Havre (coast/ D-Day+ seafood), Rouen (cathedral + museums) and a leisurely drive back to Paris along the Seine... going west and the Loire valley: Chartres (cathedral), Le Mans-Tours-Orléans (châteaux + romanesque churches+wines) and back to Paris. going South (not too far): Auxerre (old city, museums+ Chablis), Avallon (fashion museum), Dijon (beutiful city), Troyes (medieval city) and back to Paris. going East: Reims (cathedral+ champagne), Metz, Nancy (city+ museums), Saint Dizier (church, battlements), and back to Paris. On each of these loops you'll cross or be near landmarks and monuments (Google a few names); you'll find good food and accomodation... Also remember: Paris is up north in France, far from the Mediterranean...

I highly recommend Mont Saint Michel and St-Malo in northwestern France.
