What is a market researcher?

I am looking for advice on the following issue: an early stage startup is interested in hiring a senior researcher. Given that the market salary of the researcher is 120K, what would be a reasonable amount of equity to give? Is 3% too high/low?

  • The startup  hasn't raised money and is not profitable yet, but received some government funding. The salary being offered to the researcher is 60K.

  • Answer:

The driving factor in my view for negotiating the % of equity would be the long range strategic plan for the company and the role of the candidate in that plan.  Since you have not provided that information, it is difficult to gauge its potential.   I suggest you have the candidate sign an NDA and expose that data to him or her.  There are also ways other than equity to bring into play as well;  consider the role of the individual in marketing and sales, a commission for new contract signing in which he or she played a key role and similar incentives.

Lacking any information about your start-up, one thing I'll offer is generally good experience with undergraduate and graduate student interns & fellows for research-related tasks. They are frequently less expensive and often able to perform the tasks needed as part of a required class assignment.  So, if your major goal is to minimize the cost in return for the research produced, consider that an option.
