How do I get a software developer job?

What should a mid-level, experienced software developer do to get a job at a startup?

• I am a mid-level/senior software developer living in the Greater Los Angeles Area (about 1.5-2 hours from LA). I've 8-9 years of experience (4 years in US because I started my career outside of the country). I've worked on couple of technologies like C++, Python/Django, C#, JavaScript, JQuery, and etc. In the past, I've worked for software giants (including the one based in Redmond, WA). Recently, things changed pretty drastically at my end when my employer (a conventional software company) decided to cut down the costs and laid off about 10% of the people. I am not a bad developer but I was chosen from a small dev team because I was the newest (< 2 years) comparing to others (> 5 years). So, I am back in the market and looking for job since last 2 months. Things are not working pretty well due to the some reasons (see below). It's getting more frustrating day by day. I want to work on Python and/or Django (or open to learn any other technology stack) and preferably at a startup. I just want an opportunity to learn and grow. I am facing some problems in achieving my goal. First, I don't really have experience working on the projects facing millions of users. I've been using python for last 4+ years. Also, at my last job, I convinced my manager to use Python/Django for an internal but very critical project which turned out to be a great success. Second, due to the course and nature of my previous jobs or reasons I was not able to contribute to open-source community. But recently, I published my a small open-source project. and some other stuff. I am also working to start my technical blog. Third, I have a family and a house at current place which is about 1.5-2 hours from LA. So, I cannot relocate to West LA where the most startups are. But I am open to remote options, part-remote options or anything within 1 hour commute. What should I do to get that job? I've visibility everywhere - LinkedIn, AngelList and keeping an eye on possibly all job boards (including the ones for startups). Still, no luck.
