What was the strategic reason for Branson to have the airlines as three separate entities (Virgin America, Virgin Atlantic Airways, and Virgin Australia)? What kind of advantages did they gain by operating separately and why wouldn't other airlines do the same?

Answer:
Ownership. This is from memory: FAA doesn't allow foreign majority ownership and similar on Australia. Hence, the Virgin name is licensed from Virgin group. Needs checking for accuracy. http://www.virginaustralia.com/nz/en/about-us/media/2012/VIRGIN-AUSTRALIA-NEW-STRUCTURE/

I don't know for sure but it was probably for legal protection purposes in the event someone sued, the other legal entities would be independent
