What are the job opportunities after doing MS in operations research from one of top 10 ranked universities in US?
-
I am currently working in management consulting firm in India since last year. This year, I got admits from few top schools in US(including Cornell, UMich Ann Arbor) for masters in operations research courses fall 2013. I have got 2 of my admits deferred for fall 2014 because of some personal reasons. I really like my job here and might be interested to continue in consulting domain even after doing MS. Other than this, I am really enthusiastic to work in domains which involves optimization, game theory etc. Can anyone explain current job scenario in US for such courses?

Answer:
Sorry for a late reply. In my personal opinion, since corporations are engaged in cut throat competition these days in order to get their products or services in the market, there will always be need of data analysts, market research specialist, and any other field that analyzes raw data and converts it to a decision making result. One such will be OR, which will use many of such decision making tools. Also, it will broaden your prospects to use the same concepts in various other fields (supply chain, manufacturing etc.). You can look for job openings here in US in these fields, but if you may want to continue in the management consulting, this knowledge of OR can further strengthen your domain. Hope this helps, Good luck.

I do not have much knowledge about just OR, but since I plan to undertake an MS in Industrial Engineering, I have the scope/prospects of IE. To my knowledge, both OR and IE engineering would, upto a large extent, have similar prospects. Below are listed prospects of IE in USA, hope it helps. · Manufacturing:Industrial Engineers (IE) can work in manufacturing industries in various sectors such as microelectronics, automotive and aerospace. · Research and development: Researching and developing new designs, methods and systems for enhancing products, jobs in technical service environment and supply chain management · Service industries: Areas such as banking, healthcare, insurance and transportation also employ IE since they are qualified to analyze a company's customer needs, and relate those to products or services. They are expected to examine the flow of materials, processes, documentation, and information to compete more effectively. · Energy sector: Companies such as PG& E employ IE for their projects to understand the reliability, cost and emission factors manage optimum utilization of resources · Government agencies: Agencies like NASA, International Trade Commission and Defence Mapping Agency utilize the services of IE · Consultancy:IE can work as consultants at companies such as Merrill Lynch and Anderson wherein they can advise the clients to design, process and implement strategies as well as processes for enhanced growthof their company
