How much should I invest in to advertisement?

How should I persuade VCs to invest my website if I don't want to do advertisement and don't have a revenue idea yet?

  • I'm thinking to build something that may be useful for users and need investment, but I don't want to do any advertisement in the future, and don't yet have idea of making revenue. How should I talk to VCs to persuade them invest? It makes me curious how Quora get its investments?

    1. Since you are not sure about revenu model, don't be closed to advertising. 2. VCs are smart guys, they'll not jump to immediate revenue or expect you to do advertising if it doesn't make sense What you need to do is to build user base. And within that also don't worry about getting a lot of users, instead focus on proving the idea. So choose a small niche market/set of users that you can target.. build and try to capture that market. For example if you product is a location based solution,think of a zip code or city and see how you can get a good market share. If you can provide that the model works in a small market space, then the idea is not in question.. then it's about replicating the model and expanding. VCs woudl appreciate that. Revenue model - do some research/analysis on what all models could possibly be used and what are the pros and cons.. this is to ensure and communicate that you have thought through.. but you don't have to decide on one.

Build an awesome product that addresses a pain or need or want in a large market and get traction with users.  If you are an impressive team, you'll get investment.  Google started without an ironclad revenue model.  So did Facebook.

Figure out a way to do an MVP without much capex and show the market traction to VCs. IOW go lean with your startup. Also, I think you already have a clue that it's going to be difficult without a revenue model. As to Quora's business model, nobody really knows. I have figured out one way how they could make money (no ads) but I too wonder what their vision might be. It's been a while that they're live by now.
